Meeting Roles - Invocation

When You Do the

Invocation

The invocation is a prayer or inspirational thought that sets the tone for the meeting. There are two types of invocations: (1) religious and (2) non-sectarian. Since Toastmasters is a worldwide organization that includes people from many religious groups, a non-sectarian approach is required.

Prior to the Meeting

Call the Toastmaster-of-the-Meeting one week ahead of time to advise that you (or the substitute you have provided) will be present at the meeting.

Prepare a brief (no more than 1-minute) invocation or inspirational thought. Refrain from referring to a particular religious philosophy; make your reference universal.

Ideally, your thought should be "spoken from the heart" rather than read at the meeting.

During the Meeting

When called upon by the President, deliver your prayer or inspirational thought.

When You Do the

Pledge

Did you know that the pledge has only three commas...
and thus only three pauses?

US Flag

I pledge allegiance to the flag
of the United States of America
and to the Republic for which it stands,

one Nation under God,

indivisible,

with liberty and justice for all.
